From Tuesday, August 8 to Sunday, August 13, wheelchair tennis will be played at the European Para Championships. Below per category is an overview of the most established names in tennis.
Women Single
As world number one, Diede de Groot is sure to play a great tournament. The player has managed to prove herself time and again as the very best; from double gold at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo to winning Wimbledon 3 years in a row, she may even seem unbeatable. Her first match will be against Maayan Zikri (Israel).
Women Double
The Dutch team also knows to be the favorites in this event: Diede de Groot is supported by Aniek van Koot. Together they have already managed to win 12 grandslam tournaments in the past 4 years and are almost guaranteed a great performance. Their biggest opponents will be the players from the United Kingdom. Cornelia Oosthuizen and Lucy Shuker won a silver medal at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo and have reached the finals of grand slam tournaments together several times in recent years.
Men’s Single
With as many as 24 matches on the schedule, there will be plenty to see during the Men’s Singles at EPC2023. Martin de la Puente (Spain), who won the Tram Barcelona Open just a few months ago, will have a great chance at a medal. He will face stiff competition from seven-time grand slam winner Maikel Scheffers (Netherlands) and Ruben Spaargaren, No. 6 in the world, among others.
Mens Double
It will also be a spectacle for the Mens Doubles! With multiple wins at major tournaments last year, Maikel Scheffers and Ruben Spaargaren will be competing for the Netherlands. The British with Ben Bartram and Dahnon Ward also promise to be strong opponents.
Quads Single
The Dutch also seem to be the strongest here: the number 1 Niels Vink and number 2 Sam Schröder will not make it easy for the others. They both picked up medals at the Paralympics and often go neck-and-neck for first and second place at grand slam tournaments.
Quads Double
On the Quads Doubles, Niels Vink and Sam Schroder will compete for the Netherlands for the win. Together they have already won 7 tournaments this year and they will go for it this tournament as well.
