The European Para Championships (EPC), the multi-sport event for Paralympic sports that will take place in Rotterdam from August 8 to 20, 2023, has put sustainability high on its agenda. With the mission to create a new standard for Paralympic sports worldwide, we are determined to inspire people to get moving and play sports. Through collaboration and a forward-thinking approach, we aim to draw attention to Para sports and to create a sustainable sporting event.
At the European Para Championships, we look critically at the impact of sporting events on the planet. The air travel of top athletes, fans and guests and the use of temporary accommodations, for example, lead to climate change. Therefore, we are committed to making well-considered choices that can contribute to a more sustainable future. While not every choice will be fully sustainable in 2023, we strive to become increasingly sustainable in future editions. Therefore, we are working on a long-term sustainability strategy.
As early as 2023, several measures will be taken to promote sustainability, such as catering as sustainable and healthy as possible, free public transportation in Rotterdam for those involved, recycling materials after the event, and seeking functional merchandise and promotional materials. More information about the European Para Championships’ sustainability efforts can be found on the sustainability page.
At the European Para Championships, we recognize that achieving a sustainable sporting event requires cooperation from all involved. They engage with various parties to jointly explore what can be achieved. We see the unique network and global stage of elite sport as valuable means to spread a sustainable message. Together, we strive for a joint short- and long-term impact.
